SpringerLink
Another primary e-book platform for Carleton and St. Olaf is SpringerLink. We subscribe to a large collection of STM (science, technology, and medicine) and business books through this service. All books and book chapters are available to download, DRM-free and permanently, as PDFs. For a quick overview of SpringerLink, you can view a 3-minute video produced by Springer.
SpringerLink on iOS devices, Android devices, and Kindle Fire and Nook tablets
SpringerLink books and book chapters are available to download, DRM-free and permanently, as PDFs.
- Open your browser app on your iOS or Android device. Go to Catalyst and find the SpringerLink book you wish to download.
- Click the "Download Book" button or the "Download PDF" link under the book chapter you wish to download.
- Save or open the PDF in your preferred PDF reader/manager app (such as Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Adobe Reader, Dropbox, Mendeley, Evernote, or Google Drive).
About SpringerLink Downloads
PDFs
PDF files don't expire. You may keep them as long as you wish. There is no limit on the number of pages per book you may download in SpringerLink.
Full Book Downloads
To download a whole book, click on the blue "Download Book" button. You may also download individual book chapters via the Table of Contents.
SpringerLink on Kindle
Kindles will read the PDF format, and you may transfer PDFs to your Kindle.
- On your computer, go to Catalyst and find the SpringerLink book you wish to download.
- Click the "Download Book" button or the "Download PDF" link for the book chapter you wish to download.
- Save the PDF file to your computer to a location you will easily remember.
To transfer the PDF to your Kindle via USB:
- Connect the Kindle to your computer with your USB cord.
- In Windows Explorer, transfer the downloaded .pdf file to the "documents" folder on your Kindle:
- You can also use Amazon's "Personal Document Service" to email files to your Kindle. More information on this and general Kindle support can be found on Amazon's website.
SpringerLink on Nook, Sony Reader, and Kobo e-readers
Nook, Sony Reader, and Kobo all accept the PDF format, so you can download complete books and book chapters.
- On your computer, go to Catalyst and find the SpringerLink book you wish to download.
- Click the "Download Book" button or the "Download PDF" link for the book chapter you wish to download.
- Connect your reader to your computer with the USB cable that came supplied with your reader.
- Follow the instructions for transferring a PDF to your particular reader: Nook | Sony Reader | Kobo
Catalyst
All our SpringerLink titles are cataloged in Catalyst. Clicking on "Books" under "Material Type" and "Online Resources" under "Show Only" will limit to only books available electronically.

We recognize that until you've downloaded and used e-books a few times, the process can be complex and confusing. Librarians are happy to assist you--please feel free to contact us however it is most convenient for you: (Carleton | St. Olaf). However, you will probably find it most useful to bring your reading device into the library to have us help you in person.
