EndNote Guide

Update

Important Update Regarding EndNote:

Over the past several years, the use of EndNote Desktop on campus has decreased substantially while the cost of our institutional license has increased considerably. At the same time, Zotero has emerged as a more flexible, user-friendly, and affordable alternative for managing sources. Given these facts, the library is taking steps to migrate EndNote users to Zotero whenever possible, and to transition the campus-wide EndNote subscription to individual licenses that will be available to faculty and staff who demonstrate a compelling reason to retain EndNote Desktop access. Important links related to this transition are listed below.

Setting Up Sharing for Your EndNote Library

One of the great features on EndNote Online is that you can share your library with other colleagues.

Follow these simple steps after you've signed on to EndNote Online (www.myendnoteweb.com) :

  1. Click the Tab marked "Organize."
  2. Click "New Group."
  3. Name your Group and click OK.
  4. Click "Manage Sharing."
  5. Now type in the full email addresses (1 per line) of those you wish to collaborate with. Use the "Enter" or "Return" key to separate them.
  6. Decide whether your shared users will have "Read Only" or "Read and Write" access by clicking the appropriate button.
  7. Now click "Apply."

Whenever a group member logs on to EN Online, they will see a box on the left-hand side, under My References, a drop-down for My Groups.

Downloading References and Syncing

Once you have shared EndNote with your colleagues, you will need to know how to add references to the group and to "sync" your desktop and online versions of EndNote.

Add references to your desktop library (directions found here). Once you have added them to the group you are sharing with others, you need to "sync" to the online library so your partners can view them. To do this, push the sync button from your desktop and it will update the online version as well (but make sure you're logged on to the online version).

It's really important to continuously sync your accounts! The references on the desktop version will not automatically sync with the online version, so make sure to click the button every few minutes or after every change (shown in the picture below).
