Halvorson Music Library: What's here?

Halvorson Music Library houses materials in the St. Olaf library system that concern music. These include 20,000 scores, 17,000 recordings (both video and audio), 15,000 books about music, music periodicals, and reference resources. Computers and listening/viewing stations are available for use, and a group study room contains video, audio, and computer capabilities. We also subscribe to more than one million tracks of streamed audio!

St. Olaf uses the Library of Congress classification system, in which most music materials begin with the call letter "M" (see below).

Browsing the shelves

Use the guides posted at the end of shelves for more specific help in browsing. The collection is generally organized in the following manner:

  • M = the music itself (i.e. scores, printed music, recordings)

  • ML = books about music history and literature

  • MT = books about music theory, music education, and instruction and study (including many method books)

Note: Recordings (audio and video) are housed in a closed stack area and must be requested at the circulation desk.
