Aesthetics of Music
One good way to search Catalyst for materials about taste and value in music is to use the SUBJECT SEARCH "Music -- Philosophy and aesthetics." This is how catalogers label materials about musical aesthetics.
You can also include a keyword search on the genre, style, or person you are interested in, like this:

Music Index This link opens in a new windowMagazine and journal articles, book reviews, performance reviews, news items, obituaries, and other materials on classical and popular music, musicians, and the music industry. Covers materials published 1970-present. Also available in print.
Musical Aesthetics/Music Reviews in Newspapers
Newspaper databases are also good places to look for reviews. Many of the bigger newspapers, like the New York Times, are easier to if you make an account. (We pay for the subscription, so it is free for St. Olaf users.)

Follow these steps to activate your free subscription to enjoy unlimited access to The Washington Post online and on the app.
1. Visit the signup page to sign-up with your St. Olaf email address. Enter your St. Olaf email address, agree to the Terms of Service and hit Continue. Choose a password and click create an account.
2. Click on Your Name in the upper right-hand corner
3. Click My Post
4. Once you are in My Post, click Manage Account on the right hand side.
5. Make sure your email address is Verified, if not, click “Unverified” to be sent a verification email. If your email address is already verified, you will not get this prompt.
6. Once verified, click over to the Subscription & Billing tab.
7. Click Activate free digital access
Musical Aesthetics/Music Reviews in Magazines
Many of the magazines are also indexed in music research databases, like Music Index, listed above. But if you'd prefer to work directly a music periodical, here are some good ones to start. Remember that journals dedicate to your instrument (like Horn Call) or profession (American Music Teacher) will often include reviews.
