FYS 120V: Global Folktales

Project Guide

This guide contains specific instructions, screenshots, and links to tutorial videos that are helpful for this assignment! The general process for this project will be:

  • Finding locations and adding that information to the spreadsheet
  • While the map is being created, add your full project information (citations, full details, etc.) to a Google Doc that you can share with group members
  • After the map is created - get an assigned time to access the project
  • Once you access the StoryMap - add a slide of information
  • Once you're done making updates - make sure to publish!

Make sure to reading the project notes at the top of the guide!

Access the Map Template

Enter the information for the stories on the map template! We'll use this to create the map for the class. Comments are attached to the column headers for tips on what to enter in the spreadsheet.

Log into ArcGIS Online

Add this bookmark! https://stolaf.maps.arcgis.com/

You should receive an email invitation from ArcGIS Online - click on the link in the invitation in order to activate your account.

Tips for working with ArcGIS StoryMaps & ArcGIS Online:

  • When accessing ArcGIS Online, make sure that the website says "stolaf" somewhere in the URL (https://stolaf.maps.arcgis.com) before starting a project. There should be a St. Olaf banner after logging in.
  • StoryMaps will autosave throughout the project, but try to avoid having the project open in multiple tabs. It could create a version conflict.
  • Safari will occasionally return error messages when logging in or accessing previously created projects - just switch to Chrome and this will fix it!
