Google Scholar
Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com) is a free search engine which scours the web for academic publications, such as: journal and conference papers, theses and dissertations, academic books, pre-prints, abstracts, technical reports and other scholarly literature.
One benefit of using Google Scholar is that the search engine is configured like the general Google web search, making it a familiar process for most users. Another benefit is that it searches for a wide variety of information resource types and provides citation information.
Some drawbacks of using Google Scholar is that the search results may include unpublished, non-scholarly, and/or non-peer-reviewed information, and there isn't a way to limit those types of results, which can make it difficult to know whether a specific resource is appropriate for your assignment. Also, many of the results in Google Scholar will not include full-text access, which means you may still need to use library databases or resource sharing in Catalyst.
There are two options for locating full-text materials identified in a Google Scholar search: using the Library Links feature in Google Scholar or using the LibKey Nomad browser extension.
Google Scholar Full Text Options
Library Links in Google Scholar
To activate the Library Links feature, you will need to connect Google Scholar to your St. Olaf library account in the Settings for Google Scholar. Search for "St. Olaf College" and check the corresponding box before clicking "Save". When searching, you will see "St. Olaf Full Text" to the right of relevant results; clicking this link will take you to the article (if available via the St. Olaf libraries) or to the catalog for requesting the full-text via resource sharing.
LibKey Nomad Browser Extension
The benefit of adding the LibKey Nomad browser extension is that it will work with all search engines you use in your associated browser, not just for Google Scholar searches. Getting started with LibKey Nomad is easy: visit www.libkeynomad.com to download the extension for your preferred browser (e.g., Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.). Once installed, you will need to select your organization. Search for "St. Olaf College" to connect your browser to the library database. Anytime a full-text article is available via the library, the LibKey Nomad "Download PDF" button will appear at the bottom of the page.
