Research in community engagement often shows up in education and social science databases.  Useful keywords for searching include community engagement and service-learning, plus some other modifier, such as a location (Los Angeles), or a group (Hmong), or an activity/skill (literacy), etc.

Try searching directly in these journals about the practice of community engagement:

• Community Works Journal (not peer-reviewed, but a good resource for descriptions of academic civic engagement projects)
• International Journal of Research on Service-Learning & Community Engagement
• Journal of Community Practice
• Journal of Public Deliberation
• Journal of Service-Learning in Higher Education
