Keyword searching vs Subject searching in Catalyst
Keywords are the words that you already know that you would use to search for something. They are a good place to start but sometimes are not very precise.
Subjects are technical vocabulary that library catalogers use to classify everything that goes into Catalyst. These terms are very precise and because they are systematically applied are very powerful. You can either start by doing a keyword search and then looking at records and discovering Subjects. OR, if you know a Subject term you can use the Advanced Search to start with a Subject search. Here are some examples of Subject terms for this class:
Sami (European People)
Sami (European People) -- Religion
>you can also use extensions such as --History, --Hunting, --Ethnic Identity, --Social conditions
or you can add a country extension such as --Norway, --Finland, --Sweden, --Russia (Federation)
Sami literature
Mythology, Sami
Folk literature, Sami
Arctic peoples
Indigenous peoples -- Arctic regions
