Anthologies and Global Studies
- The Routledge Handbook of Shakespeare and Global AppropriationEdited by Christy Desmet and Sujata Iyengar (Routledge, 2019). The Routledge Handbook of Shakespeare and Global Appropriation brings together a variety of different voices to examine the ways that Shakespeare has been adapted and appropriated onto stage, screen, page, and a variety of digital formats. The thirty-nine chapters address topics such as trans- and intermedia performances; Shakespearean utopias and dystopias; the ethics of appropriation; and Shakespeare and global justice.
- Shakespeare beyond English: A Global ExperimentEdited by Susan Bennett and Christie Carson (Cambridge, 2013). Tackling vital issues of politics, identity and experience in performance, this book asks what Shakespeare's plays mean when extended beyond the English language. From April to June 2012 the Globe to Globe Festival offered the unprecedented opportunity to see all of Shakespeare's plays performed in many different world languages. Thirty-eight productions from around the globe were presented in six weeks as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, which formed a cornerstone of the Cultural Olympics. This book provides the only complete critical record of that event, drawing together an internationally renowned group of scholars of Shakespeare and world theatre with a selection of the UK's most celebrated Shakespearean actors.
- Shakespeare on the Global Stage: Performance and Festivity on the Global StageEdited by Paul Prescott and Erin Sullivan (Arden Shakespeare/Bloomsbury, 2015). Long held as Britain's 'national poet', Shakespeare's role in the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad confirmed his status as a global icon in the modern world. From his prominent positioning in the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies, to his major presence in the cultural programme surrounding the Games, including the Royal Shakespeare Company's World Shakespeare Festival and the Globe's Globe to Globe Festival, Shakespeare played a major role in the way the UK presented itself to its citizens and to the world. This collection explores the cultural forces at play in the construction, use and reception of Shakespeare during the 2012 Olympic Moment, considering what his presence says about culture, politics and identity in twenty-first century British and global life.
- Worlds Elsewhere: Journeys around Shakespeare's GlobeBy Andrew Dickson (Henry Holt, 2016). A book about how Shakespeare became fascinated with the world, and how the world became fascinated with Shakespeare. Both a cultural history and a literary travelogue, Worlds Elsewhere is an attempt to understand how Shakespeare has become the international phenomenon he is--and why.
Regional Studies
- Shakespeare and AsiaEdited by Jonathan Locke Hart (Routledge, 2019). Shakespeare and Asia brings together innovative scholars from Asia or with Asian connections to explore these matters of East-West and global contexts then and now.
- Shakespeare in Asia: Contemporary PerformanceEdited by Dennis Kennedy and Yong Li Lan (Cambridge, 2010). Addressing both theoretical and practical questions surrounding Shakespeare in contemporary Asia, this book asks why Shakespeare has been of use in these vast regions of the world that have no need to call on him. By investigating some of the ways Shakespeare has been reinvented and deployed, the study notes the differences between standard western approaches and those that can be seen in Japan, China, India, and South East Asia.
- Shakespeare in Swahililand: In Search of a Global PoetBy Edward Wilson-Lee (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2016). An exploration of Shakespeare as a global poet Shakespeare in Swahililand tells the unexpected literary history of Shakespeare's influence in East Africa.
- Shakespeare in the Global South: Stories of Oceans Crossed in Contemporary AdaptationBy Sandra Young (Arden Shakespeare/Bloomsbury, 2019). Contemporary adaptations of Shakespeare's plays have brought into sharp focus the legacies of slavery, racism and colonial dispossession that still haunt the global South. Looking sideways across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans to nontraditional centres of Shakespeare practice, Shakespeare in the Global South explores the solidarities generated by contemporary adaptations and their stories of displacement and survival.
- Shakespeare on the Arabian PeninsulaBy Katherine Hennessey (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). Since the turn of the millennium, the Arabian Peninsula has produced a remarkable series of adaptations of Shakespeare. This groundbreaking study surveys the surprising history of Shakespeare on the Arabian Peninsula, situating the current flourishing of Shakespearean performance and adaptation within the region's complex, cosmopolitan, and rapidly changing socio-political contexts.
- Shakespeare and Indian Cinemas: "Local Habitations"Edited by Poonam Trivedi and Paromita Chakravarti (Routledge, 2019). This book is the first to explore the rich archive of Shakespeare in Indian cinemas, including less familiar, Indian language cinemas to contribute to the assessment of the expanding repertoire of Shakespeare films worldwide. Essays cover mainstream and regional Indian cinemas such as the better known Tamil and Kannada, as well as the less familiar regions of the North Eastern states. The volume visits diverse filmic genres, starting from the earliest silent cinema, to diasporic films made for global audiences, television films, independent films, and documentaries.
