St. Olaf / Carleton Book Exchange
Catalyst (the online catalog) is a shared catalog between St. Olaf and Carleton College. When you do a search in Catalyst you will see records for items held at Carleton and you can request that those items be delivered to St. Olaf for you.
How do I request an item from Carleton?
With the record for the desired item displayed, scroll to the middle of the screen and click on "Sign In" in the yellow shaded area. Sign in with your St. Olaf ID and password. When the record reappears you should see a link that you can use to request the item. When the request screen appears, select "Rolvaag Library" as the delivery point and submit.
How long will it take for it to be delivered?
The book exchange happens twice a day: around 9 a.m. and around 4 p.m. When the book arrives you will receive an email letting you know it is here and you can go to the front desk in Rolvaag and check it out.
How do I return a Carleton book?
You can return a Carleton item to the front desk in Rolvaag and we will return it to Carleton.
Resource Sharing
What is Resource Sharing?
Resource Sharing supplements the St. Olaf / Carleton collection by providing access to materials that are not owned by the St. Olaf Libraries or Carleton College's Gould Library. Our Resource Sharing office is part of a library sharing network that includes thousands of public, academic, and special libraries. Much of what we borrow is from nearby Minnesota libraries, but we also rely heavily on out-of-state institutions, and on rare occasions, overseas libraries.
Who can use Resource Sharing?
Resource Sharing services are available to St. Olaf College students, faculty, and staff. Visiting scholars may also place Resource Sharing requests, but loan periods and services will be determined by the length of their stay on the St. Olaf campus.
What can you request?
- Books/monographs
- DVDs (for classroom/instructional use by faculty only)
- Journal articles
- Dissertations & Theses
- Microfilm/Microfiche
How long will it take to get my requested item?
This can vary a great deal but in general the average turnaround time for an article is 1 - 2 days. Book delivery depends on where the book is coming from but you should allow a week to 10 days.
How long can I have a book I requested through Resource Sharing?
This is determined by the institution we borrow it from. High use or in-demand books may have shorter loan periods but generally the loan period is 3-4 weeks. All Resource Sharing items are subject to recall by the lending library. You may request a renewal prior to the due date as long as the book has not been recalled.
Fees?
Currently, the St. Olaf College Libraries subsidize Resource Sharing copyright charges, postage fees and other associated costs for all patrons. On occasion, a lending library will impose an additional "borrowing fee." While we make every attempt to obtain items from institutions that do not charge such fees, there are instances when the requested item is only available from a charging library. If you should get an email indicating that the lending library charges, you can get in touch with a Research and Instruction Librarian to help you find alternative sources.
