Dance 270: Dance Anatomy & Kinesiology

Resources for Dance 270: Dance Anatomy & Kinesiology

Why Journal Databases (and not Catalyst)?

Journal databases usually include articles from both scholarly peer-reviewed journals as well as trade and popular magazines.  Look for a scholarly or peer reviewed button to help locate materials from scholarly journals.

For more options than those listed below, see our complete database list. Use the menus along the top of the screen to sort by the subject area and type of material you want.

Experienced researchers generally tend to prefer subject databases over Catalyst for several reasons, including:

  • You spend less time filtering out results from different fields than the one you're researching
  • You can find highly relevant materials that St. Olaf College Libraries don't have immediate access to, and then request them using Resource Sharing
  • Catalyst and the subject databases don't always talk well to each other, which means sometimes Catalyst misses resources indexed in the databases
  • The databases usually get faster & more frequent updates of new material.

Dance Databases

These databases focus on the history and interpretation of dance, but also include articles on healthy dance training and avoiding injury. It helps to include terms like "injury prevention," "hyperextension," "hip dysplasia," or whatever your topic is in your search string.

Kinesiology & Medical Databases

Do not be deceived by the words "sports" and "medicine"! These databases include research about all kinds of dance and movement-related topics.
