Some steps to follow:

Start with the vocabulary you already have. This could be words that you already know or words and phrases you picked up from doing some background research. These are your keywords.
On the library home page, click on the button that best describes what you are looking for (Book, Article). If you leave it set to the default (Catalyst), you will get a mix of books, articles, DVD's, etc.
Once you execute your search and have results, take a look at the filers on the left of your search results and see if there are any filters that will focus your search results so that you can hone in better on what you need.
Open records that look promising and check to see if there are any subjects that can push you deeper into the catalog.
