Identifying Resources
Identifying appropriate resources from your initial Catalyst search will depend upon your individual needs. However, in most cases, you will need to refine and/or repeat your search multiple times to identify the best available resources. Click on the tabs below to learn more about interpreting and refining your Catalyst search results.
Identifying an appropriate resource from your list of search results requires interpreting the information presented for each item. As shown in the example, below, you can obtain a good deal of information about each resource from within the list of results including Material Type (e.g. Article, Book, Chapter, Dissertation, Review, etc.) Title, Author, Publisher, Publication Date, and Availability (i.e., library location or online access).
Clicking on the title will open the full item record with even more details, as illustrated below. Each of the hyperlinks in the item details leads to related resources; for example, clicking the Creator, Contributor, Genre, or Subject hyperlinks will bring up a new list of search results associated with those terms.
Consider the example of performing a Simple search for "Søren Kierkegaard" which results in more than eleven thousand results; this amount of information can be overwhelming and it may be tempting to just select the first few options in your search result list to save time, even though those my not be the best resources for your needs.
When you cannot review every result individually, identifying the best resources will require narrowing down the number of results. One way to do this is by making use of the filters located to the left of the search results lists under the heading "Refine My Results," as pictured below. Filters can be used to refine your results in terms of the Material Type, Publication Date, Subject, Library, Location, Collection, Language, Author, Genre, Database, and Periodical Title.
