Step 7: Locate & Access
In order to locate and access a library resource you've identified using Catalyst, it is important to note the following:
Material Format: Online vs. Physical
Online resources can be accessed anywhere you have internet access, from on campus or remotely using your St. Olaf username/password. Online resources might include e-books, journals, newspapers, magazines, or digital recordings. Simply click the green "Online Access" box to view the resource.
Physical resources will require that you go into the library to access them, although most can be checked out from the library for personal use; the primary exceptions being materials held in the College Archives and Special Collections. Physical resources might include books, journals, newspapers, magazines, music scores, CDs, and DVDs. All physical resources will have a call number used to locate that specific item in one of the libraries.
Library Location
For physical resources, it is important to note the name of the Library in which that resource is located. Keep in mind that Catalyst is used by all libraries at both St. Olaf College and Carleton College, so there are several possible locations for physical resources. Speak to any library staff member if you need assistance tracking down a physical resource; be sure to note the call number and library location when asking for help.
Resource Sharing
Some of the resources listed in Catalyst are not owned by St. Olaf or Carleton College. In most cases, you can submit a resource sharing request and a copy of that resource can be obtained for you to use. You can use the "Get It From Other Libraries" options to request those materials; however, keep in mind that it can take time for those copies to arrive, especially physical materials that may need to be shipped.
