Environmental Studies 202: Culture of Nature

Starting Your Plot Project in Story Maps

ArcGIS Online: stolaf.maps.arcgis.com

Make sure that your project is created on the St. Olaf ArcGIS site! If you do not see the St. Olaf banner when logging into the site, double check to make sure you are not on the public ArcGIS site. If you do not have an account, you will receive a notification to activate your account before the demo training session in class. The notification invite will be valid for 14 days. It is recommend to use Chrome.

While working with Story Maps, it is recommended to use the Sidecar (with full panel) option for the journal - this will make it easier to add content to the Story Map, especially if there are a lot of entries.

**Update 1.2024: With recent updates to Story Maps - the tutorial video say to use a "subheading". This has now been changed to "Heading 1", "Heading 2", etc. Use "Heading 1" to add the text to the navigation bar - but use "Heading 2" for headings in the sidecar section.**

Finished with Your Project? Publishing and Sharing

Make sure to share it to the "ENVST 202, Spring 2024: Culture of Nature" group!

Share your project as either "organization" only, "public (unlisted)", or "public" in order for it to be graded

Is the group not available in your list?

  • Make sure you are logging into ArcGIS using the log in method in this library guide!
  • If you are logged into the St. Olaf site, and do not have the group listed, reach out to Sara (sara@stolaf.edu)

Uploading Sketches

Want to sketch portions of your plot and have a way to add them to Story Maps? Recommendations for uploading sketches:

  • Like to draw on paper? Take a picture with your phone! Upload the picture to your computer or Google Drive - Story Maps can handle JPEG or PNG formats up to 5MB.
    • Using an iPhone with Windows? You might have to turn off the HEIC settings - by default, iPhone assigned HEIC formats to images but this does not work well in Windows or Google Drive.
    • Switch off HEIC in iPhone settings.
  • iPads + Apple Pencils + Apple Notes! Upload the image to Google Drive.
