Zotero

Getting Set Up in 3 Steps

1. Sign up for a Zotero account using the link below. We strongly recommend signing up with your St. Olaf email address, as this will grant you unlimited online storage.

2. Download the Zotero app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)

3. Sign into the Zotero app using your Zotero account

Adding Resources to Your Library

Use your web browser of choice to find books, articles, or other sources that you want to save to Zotero. When you have an item you want to save, click the "share" button in your browser, then choose Zotero as the destination. Zotero will then prompt you to choose which collection you want the item to be stored in. Choose your preferred collection and click "save." The item should now be listed in your Zotero library.

iOS Example

Below is an example of what it looks like to save sources from your browser to Zotero when using an iOS device (such as an iPhone or iPad). Note that after clicking the "share" button, you may need to scroll to the right through the list of apps in order to find Zotero listed as an option.

Screenshot of an article record in the database PubMed. The "Share" button in the browser window has been circled. Below the share button is a list of apps the record can be saved to; the Zotero icon is circled in red.

Android Example

Below is an example of what it looks like to save sources from your browser to Zotero when using an Android device (such as phones and tablets from Samsung, Google, or many other companies). In the first screenshot, the user has found an article in their web browser, and has clicked the "three dots menu" in the upper right corner of their browser in order to access the "Share" button. Note that after clicking the "share" button, you may need to click "More" and view your complete list of apps in order to find Zotero listed as an option.

Three screenshots of an Android tablet screen. In the first screenshot, an article in the database PubMed can be seen in the background. The web brower menu is open, and within the menu, the "Share" button is circled. In the second screenshot, the "Share" button has been clicked, and a button labeled "More" is circled. In the third screenshot, the "More" button has been clicked, and now a Zotero icon is circled.

Organizing Your Items

Create Collections (folders)

  1. Open the Zotero app on your phone.
  2. Your list of existing collections should be labeled with the heading "My Library." To the right of the "My Library" heading should be a plus sign icon. Click this plus sign in order to create a new collection.
