Update
Important Update Regarding EndNote:
Over the past several years, the use of EndNote Desktop on campus has decreased substantially while the cost of our institutional license has increased considerably. At the same time, Zotero has emerged as a more flexible, user-friendly, and affordable alternative for managing sources. Given these facts, the library is taking steps to migrate EndNote users to Zotero whenever possible, and to transition the campus-wide EndNote subscription to individual licenses that will be available to faculty and staff who demonstrate a compelling reason to retain EndNote Desktop access. Important links related to this transition are listed below.
- Moving Your EndNote Library to ZoteroInstructions from the Zotero website for moving an existing EndNote library to Zotero.
- St. Olaf Zotero GuideIncludes instructions for installing and using Zotero.
- Get Help with Zotero or EndNoteIf you need help with Zotero or EndNote, please submit a ticket so that we can follow up with you.
- EndNote Use SurveyCurrent faculty/staff: If you believe you have a compelling reason to retain access to EndNote, please complete the EndNote Use Survey so that we can follow up with you.
Creating an EndNote Account
EndNote Online (formerly EndNote Web) is a very convenient way of managing your citations. But more importantly it has the ability to synchronize with your EndNote desktop version AND your EndNote iPad app. And probably the most important feature of all is that EndNote Online allows you to share your library and references with other users.
Instructions:
- Go to EndNote Online and click "Register". You must be on campus for this to work properly.
- Fill out the form using your St. Olaf e-mail address.
Once you have finished the registration process, an activation email will be sent to your inbox. Please click the link to activate your account and then sign in.
Now that you have an account, you can decide whether you want to use EndNote primarily on the web or download it to an iPad or desktop/laptop.
Why EndNote?
EndNote is a tool to help you organize your PDFs, references and Works Cited pages.
- search online databases and import reference citations
- store all your references in one place, along with your own notes and pdf files
- automatically format citations and bibliographies in many styles (APA, MLA, Turabian, Chicago, Cell or Ecology)
- share your references or EndNote libraries with up to 100 colleagues
- sync your desktop/laptop, web, and iPad EndNote Libraries seamlessly
- and with version X9 on a Mac, dictate your citations and notes into EndNote!
Getting used to EndNote takes a little practice. But once you've mastered the software, it's a major time saver when it comes to citing sources in your papers!
