PACON 181: Contemporary Controversies

Library Databases

Use these databases to look up information regarding Immigration, Affirmative Action, Police Reform, and Economic Inequality. CQ Researcher and PolicyFile will be particularly helpful.

When using CQ Researcher, be sure to click on the CQ Researcher link on the right hand side of the page after clicking on the CQ Researcher link below. Otherwise, you'll be searching through CQ Press, which is a much bigger resource that we don't have full access to.

  • Immigration group: search "immigration" in CQ Researcher to get to the most recent reports on the topic.
  • Affirmative Action group: search "affirmative action" in CQ Researcher to get to the most relevant reports on the topic. Make sure to look at the "Legacy Admissions" report as well.
  • Police Reform group: search "police under scrutiny" and "criminal justice reform backlash" in CQ Researcher to get to the most recent reports on the topic.
  • Economic Inequality group: search "economic inequality" in CQ Researcher to get to the most recent reports on the topic. Look at "American Capitalism" and the "US Minimum Wage" reports.

Popular Opinion

I highly recommend using Pew Research Center to supplement your research with public opinion data. Click on the "Research Topics" header, and then "Full Topic List" to browse through the various categories available in Pew Research Center.

Of possible interest, some of these broad topics include Immigration & Migration, Politics & Policy, and Economy & Work, all of which include many more specific subtopics.
