Norwegian Immigrants to the US: Finding Family Members
This guide is designed to find family members in the United States. It focuses primarily on the resources of St. Olaf College and other resources that are publicly available over the web. While there may be some resources in Norwegian, most materials will be written in English. The guide was compiled to be of assistance to a group visiting St. Olaf from Norway; please do not consider it to the the "end all-be all" of Norwegian American genealogical research. For those purposes, you should contact the centers below.
Norwegian American Genealogical Centers
- Norwegian American Genealogical Center & Naeseth LibraryThe Norwegian American Genealogical Center & Naeseth Library has been in existence for over 40 years and is one of America’s leading genealogical research centers.
- Vesterheim: The National Norwegian-American Museum and Heritage CenterVesterheim is the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center, with over 33,000 artifacts, 12 historic buildings, a Folk Art School, and a library and archives.
Norwegian American Historical Association
- Norwegian American Historical Association (NAHA)NAHA was organized October 6, 1925, as a national center for the collection and preservation of historical material. Now in its 92nd year, the Association has published more than 100 books of scholarly merit and its archive is home to more than 1,700 collections. NAHA is located on the campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
