Welcome to the St. Olaf Libraries & IT

Halvorson Music Library

Halvorson Music Library is located on the main floor of the Christianson Hall of Music. It contains approximately 14,000 books, 20,000 scores, 17,500 sound recordings, and 1,000 video recordings. The Library also provides access to online resources, including audiovisual streaming, research databases, and eBooks. You can search Catalyst to discover the materials that you need.  The books and scores are open for browsing and retrieval, but you need to request audiovisual recordings at the desk.

We also have facilities for individual and group study, an electronic piano equipped with headphones, and workstations with computers and audiovisual playback equipment.

Organization of Materials

Materials in the music library are organized by Library of Congress call numbers as follows:

M:  Music (scores, recordings, etc.)

ML:  Literature about Music (biographies, histories, etc.)

MT: Instruction and Study (analyses, method books, etudes, etc.)

We also have a small collection of books relevant to music research from the A-L and N-Z range.
