Tascam DR-60Dmkll Field Recorder

Features/Uses

  • Portable audio recorder compatible with DSLR cameras and video cameras
  • Records high-quality audio independently or alongside DSLR video
  • 3.5mm stereo input with plug-in power for lav mics or camera mics
  • Simultaneously records up to 4 channels (2 XLR/TRS combo + 1 stereo mini input)
  • XLR/TRS combo jacks with switchable +48V phantom power for condenser mics

 

Setting-Up

  • Turning on
    • Insert SD card and batteries
    • Press and hold the Home/Power button on the right side of the device
    • Alternatively, you can power the unit through the micro-usb port located by the SD card.

**When starting up the device, check that the date/time is correct in the menu. This will ensure your dates and times are correct if you choose to order files by date, which saves you the trouble of having to name each one.

  • Set date and time

  • From the menu navigate to record settings, make sure the format is 24 bit wav, sample rate is 48k, and file size is 2G.

  • In Record mode settings, you can change the setting the camera is recording in, determining how many channels you are using.

    • For the most part this will be in Stereo mode, with one or two channels. Make sure MS mode is turned off.

  • In Others, click systems to adjust the phantom power voltage, most library mics are 48 volts.

  • If you are using multiple microphones, go to input settings, and adjust each individual mic as needed. 

  • In Others, file name, you can adjust the file names of each recording, or use the recording date as a label.

 

Plug-in Ports:

  • Input:
    • Plug XLR cables, or quarter-inch microphone cables into channels one and two on the left side of the machine. If you have a DSLR or stereo mic, you can plug into channels three or four. IF you are using a DSLR camera mic, you can run that into the device using the camera-in port
    • If you are using microphones powered by phantom power, ensure the sliders (for line 1, 2, or both) are set to Phantom power
  • Output:
    • You can run a downmix of all your audio into a camera through the Camera out port, which has an adjustable gain feature. Similarly, you can run a downmix to a mixer or recorder using the Line out feature.
    • You can also listen to your audio by connecting a pair of headphones to the Phones jack.
  • Line Control:
    • Line 1+2 Sliders and Dials:
    • Use line if you are running a boosted signal off of a mixer or preamp

    • Use mic if you are using a regular mic

    • Use Mic + phantom if you are running a mic that requires phantom power, like a shotgun or boom mic.

    • Use the dials to adjust each channel’s gain.
  • Mounting:
    • You can mount the device on a camera stand with the screw on the bottom. You can then mount your camera to the top of the device with the screw located on top. 
  • Exporting:
    • You can export sound files of the device by:
    • Directly exporting off of the removed SD

    • Through the Micro-USB port located by the SD card

 

Buttons Explanations:

  • Hold slider — when engaged, this control locks the device so you don't accidentally change settings or hit the power button while recording.
  • Small dials on left and right of device — control the volume of playback and output
  • Dials on front of the device — controls gain for each recording channel.
  • Recording Button — Press record once to enter standby, where a red light should blink on the device. To begin recording, press record again and the red light should become continuous. You can alternate between recording and standby on the same track by pressing record again. To stop a recording, press the square stop button.
  • Mixer Allows us to change which of our microphone channels are going to each channel on the recorder. It also allows for panning from left to right on those individual channels.It allows you to change how each of your microphone inputs are distributed among your headphones, whether they are coming from the left, right, or both. 
  • Monitor Select —This allows you to change which channels are being monitored through your headphones.
  • Quick — Allows you to quickly access settings
